Code Enforcement

The Village places great significance on its code enforcement program. Code enforcement is intended to maintain the quality of life in neighborhoods and preserve property values. It is what keeps our community looking nice. Part-time Code Enforcement Officer David Harrison has been assigned to this effort 20 hours each week. Here are some of the violations that the officer is looking for:

• High weeds exceeding eight inches, refuse and recycling containers and other items out to the curb prior to 5:00 p.m. on the Sunday before pick-up (per Village Ordinance 8-6-5: Deposits in the Streets)
• The lack of a visible address on a building from the street
• Construction activity without a building permit
• Inoperable or unlicensed vehicles parked in public view
• Contractors working in the Village without a license
• Property maintenance code violations
• Above ground structures in the parkway, such as basketball hoops and mailboxes
• Zoning code violations, such as boats, RV’s or trailers parked in front of a residence or in the street for more than 72 hours.
• Inventory and tracking of abandoned properties

Compliance with the code is the key. A citation is typically issued when a violator cannot be contacted, a written or verbal warning is not obeyed, numerous violations are occurring, when a violator is not cooperating, or when a violation is repeated. The Village can also abate the nuisance and bill the property owner if cooperation is not received or lien the property. This can become very costly to the Village and passed on to the property owner.

Code Enforcement can’t see or catch everything. If you see what you believe is a violation, you can call the Village Hall at
708-946-2261 and the complaint will be logged and turned over to code enforcement.
